PRIMOVE is the e-mobility business unit within Bombardier whose focus is on creating market-ready solutions for all types of rail and road electric vehicles.
The PRIMOVE e-mobility portfolio is a fully integrated system including small, light and long-life batteries, fast inductive charging and highly efficient propulsion equipment which makes the shift from conventional to electric mobility easy and feasible.
Committed to innovation and the continued development of PRIMOVE solutions, Bombardier has a dedicated e-mobility-facility in Mannheim, Germany.
This Centre of Competence supports partnerships, projects and opportunities in the fast-moving electric mobility sector. It hosts a complete power lab test set-up for all vehicle applications as well as a test hall for electric buses. Different vehicles including buses, trams and minivans have been acquired to ensure that testing at the facility is conducted independently and in a real-life setting.
Dynamic charging can be tested at an additional PRIMOVE facility in Mannheim.
The first PRIMOVE e-buses are successfully serving passengers in Braunschweig, Germany, since March 2014. Moreover, PRIMOVE e-buses also run in Mannheim and Berlin, Germany as well as Bruges, Belgium. For the booming Chinese city of Nanjing, trams have been equipped with lightweight and long-life PRIMOVE batteries. In addition, tests with a dynamically charged truck were successfully completed in Mannheim in January 2014.
The very first idea for PRIMOVE was first put forward by Bombardier engineers in 2003. Initial tests were conducted on a tram at the Bautzen, Germany, site in 2009. In 2010, the first pilot project was launched in Augsburg, Germany, using a 800-metre track to perform extensive testing on a low-floor tram.
As the wider potential of PRIMOVE technology became clear, a second pilot project was launched in 2011 to investigate further vehicle applications. This time, a PRIMOVE equipped bus was used to test dynamic charging on different road surfaces in Lommel, Belgium.
